Joana is a Portuguese filmmaker that has been working in different formats of filmmaking and performance. In the past years she has regularly worked as a director in music video,commercials, short films and art related projects: installation and photography.
She lived in London, New York and Los Angeles where she studied and worked in Photography, Film and Art. Master of Arts New York University, Major Directing / Minor
Writing Los Angeles Film School, Writting Extensions U.C.L.A, Theater Direction Third Angel / Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.
In 2007 se wrote and directed 13 | 14, a story about and told by 13 and 14 year old kids. It was showed at the Gulbenkian Modern Art Center and at the Maria Matos Theater in Lisbon.
In 2008 she was attributed a grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and wrote and directed Many People, a story / installation about a city and people’s actions in this urban space.
In 2009 she wrote her first feature film.
Common to her work is a transversal language where she adapts multiple formats and spaces to the human theme, how people live and moove in different geography’s, cities, country’s. Also in her commercial and music video work her favorite theme is people and a certain mood she creates around them.
Presently living in Lisbon where she is preparing her first feature film ( currently in pre-production by Paulo Branco and ALFAMA films ) and works in video, art , music and photography projects.
